Chapter 5: Cross Purposes

Eloise

Eloise woke with a bump. Literally. Then she heard the scream of wind as the Gulfstream reversed the thrusters on its engines. Her first attempt to sit up was thwarted by the presence of a seatbelt buckled across the lower half of her ribcage.

Good golly! A glance at a silver wall clock with diamond-studded hands told her she’d been airborne for over ten hours, though it was possible there had been stops along the way. If so, she’d slept right through them. She probably could have slept straight through the night, since it was nearing ten o’clock in the evening, according to Texas time. However, they’d gained an extra five hours on the way to Bora Bora, which put them on the early side of the dinner hour.

If she remembered correctly, they’d be shuttled the rest of the way to the Billionaire’s Birthday Club by a resort-sponsored hopper flight. Roman had promised to reserve a cafe for a private dinner party.

Yawning and stretching, she unbuckled herself from the bed and swiftly searched the cabin for her sandals. She found them resting side-by-side below the foot of the bed. Elon’s doing, no doubt. He was always so considerate, though the thought of him unbuckling her ankle straps made her cheeks warm.

Inwardly congratulating herself on wearing a wrinkle resistant suit with a lacy white chemise, she swiftly straightened her hair and makeup in the adjoining powder room.

A quick rat-a-tat-tat sounded on the powder room door as she was finishing up. “Hey, there are others needing to beautify out here!” Thea teased.

Eloise unlocked and cracked open the door, thrilled that her friend no longer sounded put out with her. With a little luck, ten hours was long enough to be forgiven for her sorry attempt at matchmaking. “Join the party, girlfriend.”

“Thanks!” With a girlish giggle, Thea crowded in. Giving Eloise a hip bump, she nudged her over another few inches. “Gotta get all prettied-up for my not-so-blind date.”

“Oh!” Eloise blinked at Thea in the mirror. “So you and Elon…” her voice dwindled. Are together now? My interference in your lives actually worked?

“Yep! Me and Elon. Isn’t it wonderful? He’s such a great guy, but what am I telling you? You’re his best friend, so you know better than anyone how amazing Elon Carnegie is.”

“That I do.” Eloise watched as Thea finger-combed her gorgeous blonde hair and fluffed her bangs, wondering if her friend was joking. Something felt off about the whole conversation. “I guess…that is, I thought you were angry with me about the whole blind-date thing.”

“What? No way!” Thea protested. “Any woman lucky enough to date a guy like Elon…” She allowed her words to dwindle on a dreamy sigh.

“No, really. You looked shocked when I unveiled the identity of your blind date.”

Thea’s eyes widened. “I was shocked. All these years of keeping Mr. Wonderful to yourself, and now you want to share him? It was a lot to process on such short notice.” Then her expression relaxed, and she leaned in to squeeze Eloise’s shoulders, “But I’m over it now.
